We wanted to let all our members have details as early as possible about our plans for the 2017 Spring Meeting and Annual General Meeting. Our Spring Meeting and Annual General Meeting in May this year was a great success resulting in 15 Rapiers attending along with 32 members. So we decided to continue with the same format for our Meeting in 2017. We also wanted to select a location that will be easier to travel to for our members, who live in the North, Midlands and East Anglia.

Here is the key information for your calendars, diaries and mobile phones:

Date: Sunday 14th May 2017
Venue: Wansford Station, Nene Valley Railway
AGM Venue: David Ray Study Centre, Wansford Station
Web Site: www.nvr.org.uk

Sunday 14th May 2017 is a "Running Day" for the Nene Valley Railway, so after the Spring Meeting and AGM, why not take a train ride and visit the gift shop and Turntable Cafe before heading home. Full details of the services available and fares are on the Nene Valley Railway web site.

Yes, was a very good day: not enough time to look around the cars properly as we had a committee meeting directly after lunch, but yes, it all went off very well. Thanks to bobm for all his hard work on arranging it G

Brilliant Day at 2017 Spring Meeting and AGM

After a very wet start we had a warm, sunny day at the Nene Valley Railway.

Members celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Sunbeam Rapier Fastback to participate in the Best Sunbeam Rapier Fastback on Display with a prize of a framed Sunbeam Rapier Fastback Limited Edition print by Professor Tony Stephens. We were treated to the rare and beautiful sight of 9 Fastbacks: 5 H120's and 4 Standard in a stunning line up.

On top of that there were also 5 Series Rapiers: 1 Series III, 2 Series IIIA's and 2 Series IV's plus a rarity a Sunbeam Sceptre. Your eyes are not deceiving you. This is a Humber Scptre badged as a Sunbeam for export that never reached its overseas owner.

Our Guest of Honour was Professor Tony Stevens, Rootes Group Planning Manager for the Arrow Range of cars. Tony delivered a superb presentation giving a unique insight into how the Rootes Group worked in the 1960's and the development and launch of the Arrow Range. Naturally he focused on the Rapier Fastback and his personal involvement in the H120. Our Members then had the opportunity to quiz Tony with their own questions about the Fastback.

Professor Stevens was also our judge for the Best Sunbeam Rapier on Display and the Best Sunbeam Rapier Fastback. He was delighted to see so many Rapiers in one place and awarded the AV Preparations Trophy for "Best Rapier on Display" to Pete Wormald for his stunning Sunbeam Rapier H120 in Bitter Green. Despite driving all the way from Rugby Pete's H120 was spotless! Professor Stevens went on to award "Best Sunbeam Rapier Fastback" on Display to John Naughton for his Sunbeam Rapier Fastback in Polar White. John and his wife Jackie had travelled all the way from Knighton in Powys to be there and were rewarded with framed Sunbeam Rapier Fastback Limited Edition print.

Less Than 2 Weeks to the 2017 Spring Meeting and AGM

Hard to believe, but our 2017 Spring Meeting and AGM is now less than 2 weeks away!

We are delighted to announce that the prize for the best Sunbeam Rapier Fastback on display will be a framed, Limited Edition print of a drawing drafted by Professor Tony Stevens of a silver grey Sunbeam Rapier Fastback. This will be print Number 3 of 250, signed by Professor Tony Stevens.

In addition to this prize Professor Stevens will also be presenting the AV Preparations Trophy to the best Sunbeam Rapier on display.

Our Timetable for Sunday 14th May is:

Timing Event Location
09:00 to 11:00 Arrive. Car Park, Wansford Station
11:00 to 12:30 Annual General Meeting David Ray Study Centre
12:30 to 13:00 Sunbeam Rapier Fastback Presentation David Ray Study Centre
13:00 to 13:30 Award of prizes for:
Best Sunbeam Rapier on Display
Best Sunbeam Rapier Fastback on Display David Ray Study Centre
14:00 Spring Meeting and AGM Ends

We have also arranged some extra special attractions:

• We will be taking orders for numbered Limited Edition prints of the Sunbeam Rapier Fastback and Sunbeam Rapier H120 drawings drafted by Professor Tony Stevens. Normal retail price is £120, but we have negotiated a special discount for Club Members to make the price only £80.
• In 2017 the Committee are aiming to promote the history of the Sunbeam Rapier as the foremost Rally Car of the late 1950’s and 1960’s. We decided to start by giving our Members the chance to see for themselves just how successful Sunbeam Rapiers were in the premier European Rallies. So we have commissioned DVD copies of the Rootes Group films produced by Stanley Schofield of the Sunbeam Rapier’s participation in 8 Rallies from the 1957 Mille Miglia to the 1962 Tour de France. We will be taking orders for these DVD copies from Members at £10 each.
• The Remanufactured Parts commissioned by the Club will also be available for purchase by Members. Details including prices are included on Page 27 of Issue 147 – Spring 2017 Edition of Cut and Thrust.

For all of the above items payment will be cash or cheque only with postage and packing added where needed.

I and the other Members of your Club Committee look forward to seeing you and your Rapiers there!

We are delighted to announce that Professor Tony Stevens has accepted our invitation to be the Guest of Honour for the 2017 Spring Meeting.

Tony was the Product Planning Manager with the Rootes Group responsible for the launch of their new Arrow Range in 1966. In addition to the Arrow platform based cars for the Singer, Humber and Hillman marques, Tony also oversaw the planning for the launch of the Sunbeam Rapier Fastback and then the flagship model, the H120. Tony will be delivering a short presentation to us on the Rapier Fastbacks at 12:30 p.m. and is looking forward to answering your questions afterwards.

Tony has agreed to be the judge for our “Best Rapier on Display” and will be awarding the AV Preparations Trophy to the winner for 2017. As this year marks the Golden Jubilee of the launch of the Fastback Rapier, Tony will also judge the “Best Fastback Rapier on Display”. We are working on a special prize for the winner! Watch this space for an up date!

Since his time at the Rootes Group Professor Tony Stevens has been the creator of many new innovations and designs in the automobile industry. For background on his latest venture visit www.stevens-cipher.com.
