Yo all! I didn't really know where to put this; so for now just general chat.

I've made some enquiries re parts; 1st, rear screen seals and got a quote for making up correct profile, but using extruded rubber that would make seal up in four pieces with glued and mitered ends. These would retail to club members for around 65. What I'm trying to gauge is interest & how many we might sell. The development costs aren't too bad, but the minimum order is 40, so it is a big outlay for the club which might end up being tied up in stock for some years. If we could sell about 25% pretty soon after delivery that would help a lot, so what do you think out there; would it be something you'd go for? Non-members would be looking at around 25% more. Incidentally I also got a quote for making a proper moulded rubber, not extruded, but this doubles the cost!

2nd, I've found what I think would be a decent replacement for side glazing rubbers: it fits into the stainless steel trim without clips and is of the right profile (It is soft enough to mould to shape of back windown, but firm enough not to pucker or drag on the windows when being wound up and down: it also has a soft flock edge that rest firmly against the glass. Not quite finished my experiments yet, but anticipate that a set to do all four side windows will be about 20 to members. No big outlay here, so no pre-order interest required, but watch this space for an update in the next week or so. It could still fail!

Cheers.

Glen.

Nice one Glen,
Good seals for those side windows will keep the rain out of my sills - 20 quid is great.

I can live with 65 quid for a rear seal - what style of trim will these take, the early stainless wide trim or the later plastic insert?

Sounds good glen. Who have you had quotes from out of interest? We deal with a company called trelleborg at work, they specialise in all things rubber (nothing kinky!) So I could see what they say if you like?

Thanks all for your responses: sounds encouraging. Re Derek's Q on trim fitting; I'm hoping that it will take both, by making the slot just slightly bigger. I had a screen seal for the plastic insert, but a decent glass fitter managed to put the stainless clips & trim in and it looks OK. Personally, I'd rather have the stainless, but if you've only got the insert we need to make sure it stays in; although there are other profiles of this available.

Re your Q Jason, the firm I've been in contact with is C O H Baines in Tunbridge Wells - I think they did front screen seals for Speedies? These were very good. Happy for another quote Jason, but do you need a rear seal as pattern? I let Baines have one of my reasonable ones so they could get profile exactly right. I might have another around. Cheers. Glen.

Very interested! I found something I could make to fit...
But more expensive and I'd have to glue the corners myself...
But, I would want to order a full set!

Quick update: they (side window rubbers) fit very well, but so well in the stainless trim (w/o clips) that it is difficult to get the clips to clip it to the body to fit in as well. I think the stainless will have to be opened up a bit more and then clamped back. A bit fiddly. I will report back when I'm back on line on the 20th.

Club had them remade, but I think they're expensive. Contact the Series Spares man (Mike) and he'll be able to advise you. Cheers.

Thought I’d better update you on the glazing seals.

I had to test on the Left-hooker and so removed the existing rear trims and rubber. Oddly the profile and make up of the rubber was different from what I’ve seen previously on Rapier’s; in fact very similar set up to the new style one I have found. Rather than the metal strip it had a rubber flange to hold it in place within the s/s trim and then 3 single deep clips to keep it in place of the car.

As far as the trim I have found goes, it does slot snugly into the s/s trim and there is sufficient gap for the clips, although these may need to be eased in, depending on the condition of inner part of the s/s trim. I think it would help to heat the kinked (upswept) part slightly, but I left mine in a vice for a few hours and this seemed to do the trick. The only minor niggle is that the inner part of the trim does not have a slot to hold the rubber in place for the entire length of it (‘C’ post end missing). I found that pinching it tighter helps, but you’ll see from the photo (which I’ll post up later) that it is not quite against the glass for the last inch of the rubber.

On the very dirty windows of the kack-hander it did drag in places when the window was wound down, but despite repeated attempts it did not pull itself out of the trim, as has happened with other profiles I’ve tried. I think it would have helped if I had done the usual little cut in the rubber where the chrome side (‘B Post’) strip is; also the ‘C’ post end needs to be cut to suit the individual car i.e. angled accordingly.

Three lengths of rubber are needed to replace all four rubbers: one each for the door glass and one will do the rear quarters with enough to allow for another to be cut if you make a mistake.

I’m pretty happy with the results, but an independent check might be good. I have three lengths available if someone else would like to make up a set for their car, I’ll gladly send on a set at a discounted rate. Just contact me via e-mail. 1st come, 1st served. Cheers. Glen.

Hi all,
At last I got around to fitting the front window seal to my kack-hander today & I'm very pleased with the result. A couple of photos attached. I loosened the quarterlight, but did not have to remove. It took a bit of patience to remove old one and a bit of patience too to put replacement in. I used deep edge clips (not 'S' type), and the ribbed fitting edge on the new rubber gave sufficient grip to keep it in place as window is wound up and down. There's a good tight fit against the glass and it looks pretty close to the original.
Just a reminder on the rears: these too worked fine, but a little heat applied to the moulding helped get it to the 'kick-up' shape but can be done without, just makes it a bit quicker and neater. Also, using an 'S' type ege clip in the middle helped keep it in shape. Oh and an 'S' clip on the very end of the door rubber might also be sensible, but not critical. I found the not so deep clips were better suited to the rear one, but depends on individual vehicle to some degree.
So, club will be selling the kits now to include 3 strips of edging - 2 for the doors and one to do both rears and leave a spare length - enough to do one more rear if you've made a mistake. As most clips will be past their best the kit will also include (20) new clips.
On sale to members at £25 including P & P. to the UK. Non members, please contact me for costs. Kits should be ready to dispatch in a couple of weeks time - I've had to contact supplier to provide additional strips.
Thanks for you patience. I hope these will smarten up your Fastback and help stop the water getting in.
Cheers.
Glen.

Sorry: just seen photos not working - I'll have another look at sorting later.

Photos now sorted - Rog.

I'm interested Glen!
I have a set of original rear ones but maybe I'll keep them as those might be a bit to valuable for a daily driver...
Not sure, will see... But would like it for the front ones!
